Though now more often referred to No-gi jiu jitsu, submission wrestling differs from traditional jiu jitsu in many ways. While the lack of a gi is the first and most obvious factor, once you start your training, you’ll realize there’s more to it than just that. Submission wrestling is the perfect complement to jiu jitsu if you want to compete in the cage.
From Ancient Greece to Modern Japan
Wrestling is one of the oldest sports in the world; it was already been a classic competition in ancient Greece and Rome. It has evolved and changed over the years, and submission wrestling is now the most popular form of wrestling outside of schools.
Submission wrestling tends to be faster and more explosive than jiu jitsu. Whereas in BJJ you always have a gi to manipulate, in submission wrestling, you must manipulate a person’s limbs to control them. Students wear only shorts and a rash guard, and are challenged to secure locks, chokes, and defend themselves relying solely on their body capabilities - they have nothing to hold on to except their opponent.
